Banff (16 May)
Today we were met by an old friend, now living and working
in Canada. He took us for a drive and we went up the gondola (yes, Merryn went up the gondola) to have lunch and
ogle at the Rockies.
During the day we also saw elk, a hoary marmot and a chipmunk.
From the top.
We've noticed that Canadians are conservation minded. Recycling systems are everywhere and quite sophisticated. In some places they want organic matter to be placed in an organic recycling bin. They are also very conscious that feeding wildlife is not good for them. As well as dependency issues, it also brings animals into urban areas which can be dangerous for the wildlife and for humans. The picture below is a rubbish bin and there is a recycling bin beside it. The narrow aperture prevents bears from getting in. In order to open the large bins, you need to slide your fingers into the little cover on the top and release a catch. So far this has defeated the bears but I'm waiting for a type of mother bear that teaches its cubs to slide their small paws into the cover and . . . bingo.
