Las Vegas (8 & 9 July)
It was a mere 34°C when we got up this morning so we delayed our journey to Las Vegas and used the relative cool to do some packing. We were on the road by 10.00am. The landscape soon changed from attractive rocks to desert.
We joined a freeway and once more found ourselves in a gorge. Although 75 mph (120 kph) was the maximum speed, even thinking of driving slower resulted in huge trucks tailgating us. Our knuckles were white.
We were through it fairly quickly as a result and we were able to look at the increasingly bland desert as we neared Las Vegas. We hadn't realised what a huge proportion of the South West is desert.
Las Vegas had reached 44°C when we arrived. We stayed at Arizona Charlie's RV Park again. It wasn't as full as when we stayed 67 nights earlier. We think this is probably due to it being concrete and gravel and, with temperatures in the 40s, the concrete radiates it back. We had a farewell dinner with our travel companions, finished packing and went to bed. The temperature is alleged to have dropped to a mere 33°C at 5 am but it was over 40°C by 10.00 am when we returned our vehicles.
We are now in Sam's Town Hotel and Casino. It's a good place for a cheap room and cheap food as they want to keep people in the casino where they make their money. We are in our room, in the air conditioning. We will have an early night before heading for the airport at about 6 am for our flight home.
Our motor home trip involved 67 nights in the same bed. Given that we were moving from place to place almost every day, having our own bed, not having to pack and unpack every day, and being able to retreat into our private space made this journey easy.
There were times when not all was well. We were both sick some of the time, especially in Canada, and this limited what we could do and see. Some of the RV Parks were remote and Spartan. At Destruction Bay we were parked in an hotel car park with no facilities. On other occasions we were close to freeways and sleep was elusive.
On reflection, these are minor things. We travelled 10,181 miles. We saw some spectacular landscapes and features. We were enchanted by bears, bison, various ungulates, and little critters such as squirrels and prairie dogs. We enjoyed the company of our like-minded travel companions.
We had a big adventure.
